Congresswoman Nan Hayworth Newsletter

News from Nan - Preparing for Hurricane Irene

With forecasts predicting Hurricane Irene’s current path potentially heading in the direction of New York this weekend, it is important for residents of the 19th District to take the proper steps to ensure they are prepared for the storm.
If you haven’t already, take the time to visit the National Hurricane Center’s website or the American Red Crosswebsite for actions that you can take to organize a plan to protect you and your family based on specific hurricane hazards.  While it seems likely that we may not face the worst of the storm, we must still take proper actions in order to prepare for the worst.  After all, preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane as powerful as Irene, which may bring flooding, tornadoes and high winds to New York.
Also available on our website at Hayworth.house.gov is a list of resources that will provide you with contacts for various federal and state agencies, strategies to best prepare for harsh conditions, and tips on the best ways to stay informed throughout the storm, all of which can also be found below.
Throughout the weekend, it will be important to pay attention to updates from the local media outlets. Also, feel free to contact any of my District offices with any needs or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,
Nan Hayworth

 Hurricane Preparedness

With forecasts predicting Hurricane Irene’s current path may be pointed in the direction of New York this weekend, it is important for residents of the 19th District to take the proper steps to ensure they are prepared for the storm.  Below are resources that will provide you with contacts for various federal and state agencies, strategies to best prepare for harsh conditions, and tips on the best ways to stay informed throughout the storm.

Important Resources:

Following are web sites and contact information for various federal and state agencies:

National Hurricane Center

The following is a list of tips from local and federal agencies on ways to help you prepare for the potential threat of storms that may approach the 19th District of New York.
Tips to Be Prepared:
  • DEVELOP A FAMILY PLAN - Your family's plan should be based on your vulnerability to the Hurricane Hazards. You should keep a written plan and share your plan with other friends or family.
  • CREATE A DISASTER SUPPLY KIT- There are certain items you need to have regardless of where you ride out a hurricane. The disaster supply kit is a useful tool when you evacuate as well as making you as safe as possible in your home.
  • SECURE YOUR HOME- There are things that you can do to make your home more secure and able to withstand stronger storms.
  • ONLINE VULNERABILITY INFOThere are web sites that can give you information about your communities vulnerability to specific hazards. These include hurricanes as well as other weather related hazards.

Additional Safety Information

FAMILY DISASTER PLAN

  • Discuss the type of hazards that could affect your family. Know your home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.
  • Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home for each hurricane hazard. In certain circumstances the safest areas may not be your home but within your community.
  • Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet.
  • Make a plan now for what to do with your pets if you need to evacuate.
  • Post emergency telephone numbers by your phones and make sure your children know how and when to call 911.
  • Check your insurance coverage - flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance. National Flood Insurance Program
  • Stock non-perishable emergency supplies and a Disaster Supply Kit.
  • Use a NOAA weather radio. Remember to replace its battery every 6 months, as you do with your smoke detectors.
  • Take First Aid, CPR and disaster preparedness classes.

Throughout storm season it is important to pay attention to updates from the local media outlets. Also, feel free to contact my office with any needs or concerns you may have.

Sonya Chung
author of
Long for This World
Thursday, March 4 ² 6:30 p.m.

In 1953, on a small island in Korea, a teenage boy stows himself away on the ferry that is carrying his older brother and his brother’s wife to the mainland. Fifty-two years later, Han Hyun-kyu is on a plane flying back to Korea and walking away from his wife in America. It is his daughter Jane–a war photographer recently injured in a bombing in Baghdad–who goes to find him in a small town in South Korea. Long for This World is a novel of cultural crossings and loss that establishes Chung as an exciting new voice in fiction.

RIF needs your help

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), founded in 1966, motivates children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF's highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provides 4.6 million children with 16 million new, free books and literacy resources each year. For more information, and to access reading resources, visit RIF's website at www.RIF.org

From Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO, of Reading Is Fundamental (RIF):

"President Bush’s proposed budget calling for the elimination of Reading Is Fundamental’s (RIF) Inexpensive Book Distribution program would be devastating to the 4.6 million children and their families who receive free books and reading encouragement from RIF programs at nearly 20,000 locations throughout the U.S."

“Unless Congress reinstates $26 million in funding for this program, RIF will not be able to distribute 16 million books annually to the nation’s youngest and most at-risk children. RIF programs in schools, childcare centers, migrant programs, military bases, and other locations serve children from low-income families, children with disabilities, foster and homeless children, and children without access to libraries."

NYC walk for lupus now

On Sunday, May 18th at Battery Park here in New York, there will be a walk against Lupus.

Unfortunately for many, Lupus is never diagnosed properly, and they lose their lives before a true path toward healing is ever begun.

The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that at least 1.5 million Americans and 5 million people worldwide have a form of lupus. 90% of these are women, and a startling number of these women are African Americans, Latinos, Asians, and Native Americans.

Lupus is a significant public health problem that requires action and more public and private research now! The LFA mission is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of lupus, support individuals and families affected by the disease, increase awareness of lupus among health professions and the public, and find the causes and cure, which are still unknown.

Our goal is to raise $250,000 through the Walk for Lupus Now®. This is the first annual walk, and I am very excited about fundraising for this cause. Please know that all the money raised will go towards supporting the 41,000 people in the New York area who have been diagnosed with lupus.

Please help us achieve this goal by making your tax-deductible donation to my team, THE MAMATHANGS! here:
